Speech and Language Assessment Options

Every child is different, and the level of assessment they need will depend on their age, communication profile and the concerns raised.

Free Initial Consultation

Up to 10 minutes – Free

A brief telephone consultation giving you an opportunity to explain your concerns and the type of support you are looking for.

I will advise whether Little Gems Speech Therapy may be able to help and discuss the most appropriate assessment, therapy or consultation option.

Initial Screening Assessment

Up to 45 minutes – £170

A screening appointment may be suitable when you would like an initial overview of your child’s speech, language or communication skills without a detailed written report.

This includes:

A parent questionnaire and discussion
An informal assessment
Verbal feedback
Advice and recommendations regarding possible next steps

A written summary or assessment report is not included with this option.

Comprehensive Speech and Language Assessment

Up to 2 hours – £300

A comprehensive assessment provides a more detailed understanding of your child’s communication strengths and areas of need. Activities are selected according to your child’s age, needs and level of engagement.

This may include:

A parent questionnaire and detailed discussion
Informal assessment through play, conversation, observation and structured activities
Standardised and non-standardised assessment procedures, where appropriate
Liaison with other professionals involved in your child’s care
Analysis of the assessment findings
A two-to-three-page written report, including an evaluation and recommendations
A written programme of personalised targets

Book a Comprehensive Assessment

Therapy and Follow-Up Support

Individual Therapy Sessions

Up to 60 minutes – £80

Individual therapy sessions can take place at your child’s home or educational setting. Sessions are tailored to your child’s identified communication needs and agreed therapy targets.

Review Sessions

Up to 60 minutes – £90

A review session includes a brief assessment of your child’s current targets to determine whether they remain appropriate.

Updated recommendations or a new programme of targets will be provided following the review, where required.

Indirect Intervention

Up to 60 minutes – £80

Indirect intervention involves speaking with nursery or school staff and providing advice, strategies and recommendations to support your child’s communication.

This can take place in person or over the telephone.

Additional Costs

Travel

Travel is charged at 50p per mile where an appointment takes place at your home, nursery, school or another agreed setting.

Any applicable travel costs will be confirmed before the appointment is booked.

Additional Resources

Bespoke resources are individually priced and may include:

Communication booklets
Visual timetables
PECS pictures
Speech and language games
Interactive activities
Other personalised communication resources

The cost of any additional resource will be discussed and agreed with you before it is created.

What Happens After the Assessment?

Following your child’s assessment, you will be given clear recommendations about possible next steps. You do not need to make a decision immediately and can take time to consider which option is right for your child and family.

Your options may include:

- No Further Intervention

You may decide that no further support is required at this time. Advice and recommendations will be provided where appropriate.

- Regular Therapy Sessions

Therapy can take place at your home or your child’s educational setting on a:

Weekly basis
Fortnightly basis
Monthly basis

Each therapy session costs £80 for up to one hour. The frequency of therapy will depend on your child’s needs, the recommended targets and your family’s circumstances.

- One-Off Therapy Demonstration: Up to one hour – £80

You may choose a one-off demonstration session at your home or your child’s educational setting.

During the session, I will demonstrate how to work on selected parts of your child’s recommended programme or targets. This will help you and other supporting adults understand how to use the strategies within everyday activities and routines.

- Review Appointment: Up to 45 minutes – £90

A review can be arranged after approximately four to six months to consider how your child is progressing with their programme.

The session will help determine whether the current targets remain appropriate and whether any new recommendations or targets are needed.
